X-RAY “DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY”

Depending on the body part being examined, you may be asked to change into a provided gown. Jewellery and body piecing items which are in the field of interest may make interpretation of the images difficult. For this reason, removal of these items is preferable. No other specific preparation is required.

CT SCANNING

For CT of brain, chest and neck, have nothing to eat or drink for two hours prior to the examination.

For CT of abdomen and pelvis, have nothing to eat or drink for four hours prior to the examination. If oral contrast is required, you will be asked to drink the contrast solution 1 to 2 hours prior to the examination.

For CT scans of other parts of the body, preparation is not usually required. Please bring your previous images for review when you come for your scan.

ABDOMINAL/LIVER ULTRASOUND

Abdominal/liver ultrasound requires you have nothing to eat or drink and no smoking or chewing gum for eight hours prior to the examination. For children under six years of age, no preparation is required.

RENAL ULTRASOUND (KIDNEYS AND BLADDER)

A full bladder is required for this study. The bladder needs to be emptied 1.5 hours prior to the appointment. Then drink 1 litre of water over the next 30 minutes and hold until your appointment. For children under six years of age, drink two glasses of water 30 minutes before the appointment.

PELVIC ULTRASOUND

A full bladder is required for this study. The bladder needs to be emptied 1.5 hours prior to the appointment. Then drink 1 litre of water over the next 30 minutes and hold until your appointment.

OBSTETRIC ULTRASOUND

A full bladder is required for this study. The bladder needs to be emptied 1.5 hours prior to the appointment. Then drink 1 litre of water over the next 30 minutes and hold until your appointment. In the later stages of pregnancy less water may be required.

MUSCULOSKELETAL ULTRASOUND

No preparation is required. Please wear cloths appropriate for the body part being scanned ie shorts if your knee is being scanned.
